One of the important considerations we had to make for the Mote project was finding a suitable means of providing helpful tools and information to end-users in a portable manner. The method chosen would have to work, regardless of whether or not a user is connected to the Internet. It also needed to be easy to use, simple but not simplistic, and has to be backed by active development and an active and enthusiastic community.
We almost totally ignored TiddlyWiki, since we evaluated a really old version of the project. What a mistake that would have been. But thanks to an endorsement from a beta tester, we went back to it to find version 5, and were very pleased at what we found.
Getting used to working with TiddlyWiki is both fun, and productive. We endorsed the use of great sites like Obsidian Portal, but TiddlyWiki stands on its own strengths for use within your roleplaying game sessions, both for campaign management, and journal-keeping purposes.
It has a unique navigation system, and it's tagging system is intuitive, and makes collating entries under particular subject headings, very easy. Created entries, or tiddlers, or even the entire wiki, can be easily shared to others, where they can, in turn, overwrite their copies of the wiki, or import parts into wikis they are writing themselves. TiddlyWiki supports embedding rich content, and formatting is done by WikiText.
We can't fully extol all of its virtues here, and the best way to get familiar with TiddlyWiki is to download and play around with it yourself. All the information needed to learn how to use it is available up front, once you open the file.
Our only gripe may be a small inconvenience while saving progress using Google Chrome, but it's not really TW's fault, Chrome's architecture prevents TW from working as seamlessly as it should.
Tying all this to the Mote Project, we will be managing our own TiddlyWiki, updating it with useful information as we go. Users can download this wiki for reference, or submit tiddlers for us to add to ours. At some point in the future, this wiki will automatically update itself through the application. It is our hope that the community will find this wiki useful, and support it by adding content that is useful to all.
